Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) continue to play a pivotal role in India’s economic momentum, particularly across sectors like energy, infrastructure, and heavy industries. These government-backed entities are often considered stable investments, known for steady dividends and long-term value. However, not all PSU stocks are created equal — some show bullish momentum, others offer value on dips, and a few may require caution.

Here’s a breakdown of top PSU stocks that made headlines this week — and whether you should buy, hold, or avoid them in the upcoming sessions based on market performance and technical trends:

Top PSU Stocks to Watch This Week

Coal India Ltd (NSE: COALINDIA)
Verdict: Buy on Breakout

Coal India, the world’s largest coal producer, remains critical to India’s thermal energy supply. It plays a major role in ensuring fuel security for the country’s power sector.

Technical Outlook: The stock is on the cusp of a potential breakout. Momentum indicators are positive.

Buy Above: ₹390

Target Range: ₹397 – ₹418

Stop Loss: ₹380

Traders looking for quick, momentum-based gains can consider buying if it crosses ₹390.

Gujarat Gas Ltd (NSE: GUJGASLTD)
Verdict: Hold / Buy on Dips

Gujarat Gas is a market leader in the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector, with a vast customer base including households, commercial, and industrial users.

CMP: ₹473

Pattern Formed: Morning Star at 50-day EMA

Buy Range: ₹490 – ₹530

Stop Loss: ₹420

Suggested Holding Period: 1 to 7 weeks

Ideal for short-to-medium-term investors. Enter on confirmation of breakout; maintain strict stop loss.

NBCC (India) Ltd (NSE: NBCC)
Verdict: Accumulate on Decline

NBCC is a key player in project management and government infrastructure execution. After a sharp rally, the stock is in consolidation.

Current Trend: Facing resistance near 20-day EMA

Buy Range: ₹107 – ₹110

Target Range: ₹117 – ₹145

Suggested Holding Period: 1 to 4 months

Traders and investors can consider accumulating near ₹110 for medium-term gains.

Final Word

PSU stocks can bring stability, growth, and portfolio resilience, especially when approached with discipline. While government backing offers a layer of security, timing entries and exits, applying stop-loss discipline, and understanding sectoral fundamentals are essential.

As always, align your PSU stock strategy with your risk appetite and investment horizon.

Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s (SECL) NEET coaching assistance CSR program “SECL Ke Sushrut” has delivered exceptional results. In the recently announced NEET 2024 results, 39 out of the 40 students enrolled in the program have cleared the cut-off and passed the exam, delivering a remarkable 98% success rate. The program was launched with the guidance and support of the Ministry of Coal, ensuring its successful implementation.

Mahendra Nayak, one of the qualified students from Umaria, a tribal district in Madhya Pradesh, expressed his gratitude. Nayak said that his father who is as farmer could not afford coaching for the NEET exam and ‘SECL ke Sushrut’ program helped him get top coaching facilities.

Launched in 2023, the “SECL ke Sushrut” initiative was designed to provide free residential medical coaching to Class 12 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly in the coal belt areas of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Students were selected through a competitive exam based on the NEET pattern, and coaching was provided in partnership with a private coaching institute in Bilaspur. The program, which includes regular national-level test series, mentoring and lodging & boarding facilities is fully funded by SECL. This program has proven to be a lifeline for students from underdeveloped tribal areas who could not afford coaching facilities. Now, these students are set to fulfil their dreams of becoming doctors, serving the nation, supporting their families and achieving self-reliance.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in SECL’s efforts to empower communities in the coal belt through better education. By providing quality coaching and support, SECL is helping to build a brighter future for students from economically challenged backgrounds, enabling them to pursue their dreams and contribute to society.

NTPC Unchahar, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has successfully created employment opportunities for 60 rural youths from surrounding villages, bringing joy and hope to their lives. The youths were provided job offers at a ceremony marking the completion of a skill development program, organized in collaboration with the Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Lucknow. Alongside the job offers, the trainees were also awarded course completion certificates, marking a significant step in their professional journey.

Ruma De Sharma, Head of the Human Resources Department, emphasized the long-term impact of this initiative. She stated, “By learning new skills, these rural youths have taken a significant step towards self-reliance. It’s not just about 60 individuals finding employment; it’s about 60 families being uplifted and moving towards a better standard of living. We are delighted that NTPC Unchahar’s CSR initiative has played a crucial role in creating this change, and we are confident that these youths will continue to grow and succeed.”

She highlighted the comprehensive nature of the program, which included both theoretical and practical components, ensuring the trainees were fully prepared to meet industry demands.

One of the beneficiaries, Kajal Vishwakarma from Unchahar Dehat village, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity. “I am incredibly happy to have received this training. NTPC has not only provided me with employment but also instilled in me the confidence to succeed in life. I am certain that this opportunity will help me secure a stable and prosperous future,” she said with a beaming smile, holding her job letter.

The event was graced by several prominent dignitaries, including Ratan Kumar Director of CIPET; Rajesh Kumar General Manager (Operations); Dr. Madhu Singh Chief Medical Officer; Jitendra Kumar Additional General Manager (Safety); Sudesh Kumar Deputy General Manager (Civil); and Ashish Gairola Deputy General Manager (Project). Village representatives from Raipur, Bahewa, and Muraramau, including Dharmnath Yadav, Rais, and Jitendra Singh, were also present to witness the joyous occasion.

The skill development program was launched in April 2024, when NTPC Unchahar, in partnership with CIPET, Lucknow, selected and sponsored the training of 60 youths from 15 nearby villages. The program was designed to impart specialized skills in petrochemical engineering, a sector that offers significant employment opportunities in India’s growing industrial landscape. The CSR initiative aimed to empower local communities by providing a platform for youths to acquire technical knowledge and practical experience, thereby improving their chances of securing gainful employment.

As NTPC Unchahar continues to focus on community development through its CSR initiatives, this program stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to uplifting rural communities and fostering long-term growth. By providing these youths with the tools they need to succeed, NTPC is not only addressing immediate employment challenges but also contributing to the sustainable development of the region. This initiative has brought about a positive change in the lives of many, with the potential to inspire future generations to pursue technical education and secure rewarding careers. Through its continued efforts in CSR, NTPC Unchahar reaffirms its role as a responsible corporate entity dedicated to making a lasting difference in the communities it serves.

Coal India subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) program has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of heart surgeries for 20 children suffering from congenital heart disease (CHD). This effort is part of “SECL Ki Dhadkan,” a vital initiative aimed at providing affordable, life-saving cardiac care to economically disadvantaged families in SECL’s operational coalfield areas across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

SECL Ki Dhadkan, an extension of Coal India’s overarching CSR initiative ‘Nanha Sa Dil’, focuses on ensuring that children from SECL’s project-affected regions can access the necessary medical interventions for CHD. The project supports early diagnosis, screening, and treatment of CHD in communities that often lack resources for specialized healthcare.

The initiative primarily benefits children from SECL’s operational areas, which include the districts of Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Korea, Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Surajpur, Balrampur and Sarguja in Chhattisgarh, and Anuppur, Shahdol, and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh.

As part of this initiative, SECL has collaborated with the Shri Satya Sai Health & Education Trust in Raipur, with all surgeries performed at the Shri Satya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Raipur.

The initiative is particularly beneficial for families in tribal and rural areas who face severe economic constraints, removing financial barriers to critical treatment.

A special program, ‘Gift of Life’, was held to celebrate the successful discharge of the young patients at the hospital on October 25, 2024. During the event, the children received tokens of encouragement for a healthy and bright future, marking SECL’s commitment to the well-being of its communities.

With this initiative, SECL demonstrates its commitment to uplifting marginalized communities by offering life-saving interventions that ensure equal access to essential healthcare. ‘SECL Ki Dhadkan’ stands as a testament to SECL’s mission to foster sustainable development and address healthcare inequities in its operational regions.

Celebrating a decade of India’s CSR Legislation and Coal India’s CSR institutionalisation, the 3rd CIL CSR conclave began today in Kolkata. Inaugurating the Conclave, Dr. C V Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal and the Chief Guest of the event, appreciated the CSR initiatives of Coal India Limited. Referring to the social commitment of CIL, Sh Bose said that “we are living in a transformational era and we have to see beyond the boundaries which is essential for building relationships”.

Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) umbrella CIL had spent Rs. 5,579 Crores in a decade, since CSR’s institutionalization, which is higher by 31 percent than the statutory requirement. CIL is among the top three corporates of the country in CSR spend.

Beginning FY 2015, the first year of statutorily mandated CSR, in a ten year span till FY 2024 CIL was mandated to spend Rs.4,265 Crores but the company was ahead of it by Rs. 1,314 Crores. The annual average CSR spend was Rs. 558 crores during this period.

Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal and the Guest of Honour said that CSR is an article of faith for CIL and its subsidiaries and beginning January there would be theme-based CSR every month. Speaking on the occasion, Shri P M Prasad, Chairman CIL added that CIL is committed to CSR activities and has spent Rs. 5,570 Crores on CSR during the last decade on pan India basis much of it focused on health and education.

CIL’s concentrated focus on health care, education and livelihood is reflected by the fact that, of the decade’s total CSR spend of Rs.5,579 Crores these three essentials accounted for 71% at Rs.3,978 Crores. Health care topped with Rs.2,770 Crores at close to 50% of the total outlay. Education and livelihood comprised Rs.1,208 Crores, over one-fifth of the total. The remaining amount was spread across rural development, and other themes like environmental sustainability, promotion of sports, disaster management etc.

95 percent of CSR funds were utilized in eight operational states, with a focus on Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.

In respect of fund allocation, as per the ‘Companies Act 2013’, CSR budget of CIL and its subsidiaries is earmarked at 2% of the average net profit (profit before tax, less dividend) of the three immediately preceding financial years or Rs. 2 per tonne of coal produced in the previous financial year, whichever is higher.

As per the policy, CIL’s subsidiaries may spend 80% of their CSR fund within 25 Km radius of their command areas and the rest 20% in the State where they operate. The apex body CIL is not restrained by such geographical barriers giving it a greater leeway to take up CSR projects on pan India basis.

Speaking at the event, Vinay Ranjan, Director (Personnel) of CIL said that CIL is the first CPSE in India to introduce community Development cadre in 2014 to have a microscopic focus on CSR.
