Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) has launched an innovative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative titled the “Atmanirbhar Project” at the Regional Mental Hospital in Nagpur, aimed at empowering patients recovering from mental health conditions through skill development and livelihood opportunities.

The project has been initiated under the guidance of WCL’s Director (Human Resources), Dr. Hemant Sharad Pande, with a focus on promoting self-reliance and social reintegration among patients. As part of the initiative, modern machinery has been provided for activities such as agarbatti (incense stick) making, mop production, disposable plate manufacturing, and embroidery work.

These vocational activities are expected to equip patients with employable skills, enabling them to generate income and rebuild confidence while facilitating their gradual reintegration into society.

Senior officials from WCL, including General Manager (CSR) G. Sitaraman, attended the launch event along with his team. The programme also saw participation from key stakeholders of the Regional Mental Hospital, including Medical Superintendent Dr. Pankaj Bagde and Medical Officer Dr. Dengre.

Representatives from Ananyata Foundation, including Director Dr. Abhishek Marmad and Praveen Kakde, were also present at the occasion. They highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening mental health rehabilitation frameworks and providing patients with meaningful opportunities for recovery and independence.

The initiative reflects WCL’s continued commitment to community welfare and underscores the critical role of CSR in supporting mental healthcare and rehabilitation efforts in India.

Nihilent, a global consulting and technology services company, is significantly expanding its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) footprint through impactful initiatives in education, healthcare, and inclusion across underserved communities in India. Anchored in its philosophy of human-centric progress, the company is leveraging technology, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships to address critical societal gaps.

In the education sector, Nihilent has enhanced access to digital learning at the Bhatkya Vimukta Jati Shikshan Sanstha (BVJSS) residential school in Pune. The initiative includes the establishment of a fully equipped computer laboratory with internet connectivity, alongside the introduction of a structured digital literacy curriculum. This effort is empowering students from nomadic and economically vulnerable communities with essential skills for a technology-driven future.

The company has also upgraded living conditions at the BVJSS campus by developing modern sanitation facilities and supporting essential needs such as nutrition and medical supplies. These interventions have improved hygiene standards, reduced health risks, and enhanced the overall well-being of students.

Commenting on the initiatives, L.C. Singh said, “At Nihilent, our approach to social responsibility is deeply rooted in our belief in human-centric progress. We see technology not just as a business tool, but as a powerful enabler of dignity, opportunity, and inclusion. Through our efforts in education and healthcare, we aim to touch lives in meaningful ways by helping children learn, grow and thrive, regardless of their circumstances. Our commitment is to create lasting impact by empowering communities and ensuring that no child is left behind.”

In healthcare, Nihilent is supporting pediatric cardiac care through its partnership with Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals in Navi Mumbai and Yavatmal. The company has contributed advanced medical equipment, including anesthesia machines and ICU monitoring systems, enhancing the hospitals’ ability to deliver safe and effective surgical care.

Additionally, Nihilent is facilitating life-saving pediatric cardiac surgeries for children suffering from congenital heart disease, enabling economically disadvantaged families to access world-class treatment at no cost.

Further strengthening its commitment to inclusion, Nihilent has partnered with Ayodhya Charitable Trust. Through the provision of digital hearing aids, specialized educators, and computer training support, the initiative is improving communication abilities, increasing classroom participation, and enhancing learning outcomes for hearing-impaired children.
