The inaugural programme was graced by Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director (Finance), NTPC Limited, in the presence of Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, Kasturi Maitra, President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, and Anurag Gupta, General Manager (O&M), NTPC Bongaigaon.

This year’s programme has selected 50 girls from 12 neighbouring schools, an increase of 10 participants over previous editions. The month-long residential initiative is designed for girls aged 10–12 years and focuses on building self-confidence, leadership qualities, life skills and social responsibility. The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed by the NTPC theme song.

Senior officials, including L. N. Meitei, Commandant, CISF, Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, representatives of unions and associations, welfare organisations, teachers, parents and guardians attended the inaugural ceremony.

The event featured a short film tracing the journey of GEM 2026, vibrant cultural performances by girls from the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club and students of Notre Dame Academy, along with inspiring testimonials from alumni of the GEM 2023 batch. Students also presented a moving performance inspired by the life and ideals of Malala Yousafzai, highlighting the transformative power of education in empowering girls.

Addressing the gathering, Jaikumar Srinivasan emphasised that empowering girls is fundamental to building stronger families and communities. He praised NTPC Bongaigaon for creating a nurturing environment that encourages young girls to realise their full potential. Following the inaugural programme, he visited the residential facilities, interacted with the participants and distributed bicycles to all 50 girls as a gesture of encouragement for their educational journey.

In his address, Arnab Maitra reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to education, empowerment and inclusive growth, describing the Girl Empowerment Mission as one of the organisation’s flagship community development initiatives that nurtures confident, capable and socially responsible future women leaders.

The four-week residential programme, running from 4 July to 31 July 2026, offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes academic learning, personality development, digital literacy, sports, creative arts, health and wellness sessions, exposure visits and activities aimed at enhancing the participants’ physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Since its launch in 2022, NTPC Bongaigaon has empowered 210 girls, including participants in the current edition. A distinctive feature of the programme is that 10 per cent of participants, selected through an independent evaluation conducted by an external agency, are provided free education at the NTPC township school, enabling deserving girls to continue their studies in a supportive learning environment.

Across the country, the Girl Empowerment Mission has benefited more than 13,000 girls at NTPC locations, reflecting the company’s sustained commitment to gender equality, social responsibility and sustainable community development.

As part of the initiative, a Sales-cum-Display Counter under the project “Promotion of Eri Silk and Handloom Village in Raimona National Park” was formally inaugurated at Mothambil Forest Village, located about 2 km from Raimona National Park, on February 25, 2026.

The programme was attended by Shri Derhasat Basumatary, Executive Member (Health & Family Welfare), BTR Government, along with Smt. Bhanulata Mushahary, Director of Sericulture, BTC; Shri Ranjit Kumar Gogoi, Assistant Director, BTC; Shri Amit Kumar Asthana, Additional General Manager (HR), NTPC Bongaigaon; Shri A.K. Chakravorty, Former Director of Sericulture, BTR; Shri Roshan Dungdung, DGM (HR); Ms. Smriti Das, Executive (CSR); and other officials from NTPC and BTC.

Promoting Sustainable Rural Livelihoods

The project, implemented by the BTC Government in collaboration with the Department of Sericulture and supported through NTPC Bongaigaon’s CSR funding, involves a total investment of ₹30 lakh. Mothambil Forest Village has been identified as a model site to promote eco-tourism-linked livelihood development through Eri silk rearing and handloom weaving.

The initiative directly benefits around 125 women beneficiaries — including 89 silkworm rearers and 36 weavers — while indirectly supporting more than 779 beneficiaries and over 1,700 villagers across nearby areas.

Speaking at the event, Derhasat Basumatary described the Bodoland Sericulture Mission, launched in 2023, as a major driver of rural livelihood enhancement with a strong focus on women-led economic activities. He highlighted that the initiative represents a convergence of biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism, and the traditional silk heritage of the Bodo community.

Strengthening Market Linkages

The newly inaugurated Sales-cum-Display Counter, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹5.90 lakh, has been designed as a traditional Assam-type structure featuring dedicated display arrangements for locally produced Eri silk and handloom products. The facility will be managed by village women beneficiaries, enabling direct market access and improved value realisation.

Amit Kumar Asthana stated that NTPC Bongaigaon remains committed to inclusive development in the Bodoland Territorial Region through CSR programmes focused on livelihood generation, skill development, and women empowerment. He noted that the initiative integrates economic opportunities with local culture and environmental sustainability.

Integrated Eco-Tourism and Cultural Preservation

The broader project includes establishment of Kesseru plantations for Eri silkworm rearing, construction of rearing houses, provision of spinning machines, supply of improved certified looms with accessories, distribution of quality Eri yarn, and creation of a dedicated sales platform.

By linking the natural heritage of Raimona National Park with traditional weaving practices, the initiative aims to create an eco-tourism ecosystem where visitors can witness silk rearing, spinning, and weaving while purchasing authentic handloom products directly from artisans.

The project is expected to strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship, enhance women’s incomes, preserve traditional crafts, and promote sustainable livelihood development across the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The agreement was signed on February 2 as part of NTPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in Assam. The MoA was executed by Amit Kumar Asthana, AGM (HR), on behalf of NTPC Bongaigaon, and Awanish Tripathi, President, Cosmic Foundation.

The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Arindam Sinha, Regional Executive Director (Eastern Region-II & Southern Region), NTPC Limited; Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon; and Anurag Gupta, GM (O&M), NTPC Bongaigaon.

Under the project, 10 solar-powered RO drinking water systems will be installed at identified public locations across Guwahati at a total cost of ₹43 lakh. Each unit will be equipped with a 1200 Wp MNRE-approved solar module (IP66, ROHS and CE compliant, ISO 14001:2015 certified) along with a 500-litre storage tank, ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water through clean and sustainable energy.

Speaking on the occasion, Arindam Sinha reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to community welfare and sustainable development, highlighting that access to safe drinking water remains a critical public health priority and a core element of responsible corporate citizenship.

Awanish Tripathi expressed gratitude for the partnership and assured timely execution of the project, along with quality installation and long-term maintenance of the systems.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, integrating renewable energy with essential social infrastructure. The project is expected to generate sustained social impact by improving public health outcomes while promoting environmentally responsible development in the region.

Football—often described as the heartbeat of Bodoland and the North East—found new champions this year as NTPC FC showcased exceptional skill, teamwork, and determination throughout the tournament.

Formed in 2014 by football enthusiasts among NTPC Bongaigaon employees, NTPC FC has grown from a small in-house sporting group into a robust platform that nurtures rural football talent across Salakati, Kokrajhar, and adjoining areas. Through its CSR and Sports Council-led initiatives, NTPC Bongaigaon has been playing a pivotal role in promoting grassroots sports and empowering local youth through structured sporting opportunities.

The 2025 league, which commenced on June 13 and concluded recently, witnessed NTPC FC remain unbeaten throughout the season. The team played nine matches—winning seven and drawing two—accumulating 23 points, a clear lead over the runners-up, and securing promotion to the Super Division League.

Two rising stars, Dinti Hazowary and Dhananjay Brahma, emerged as the league’s top scorers with eight goals each—testament to the strong mentoring and support ecosystem created by NTPC’s sustained engagement in community sports. Recognizing the importance of professional training, the NTPC Bongaigaon Sports Council, in coordination with KDSA, appointed a dedicated coach to further refine the team’s skills and strategies.

This unique blend of structured coaching and the raw energy of rural talent has transformed NTPC FC into a disciplined, high-performing squad representing both corporate and community pride.

In a proud moment for the NTPC family, the Champion Trophy was presented to Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, who lauded the team’s commitment, discipline, and inspiring journey “from grassroots to glory.” Present on the occasion were Shri Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, along with representatives from the NTPC Sports Council, Union and Association members of the station, who collectively congratulated the players for bringing laurels to NTPC and the local community.
