The inaugural programme was graced by Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director (Finance), NTPC Limited, in the presence of Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, Kasturi Maitra, President, Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, and Anurag Gupta, General Manager (O&M), NTPC Bongaigaon.

This year’s programme has selected 50 girls from 12 neighbouring schools, an increase of 10 participants over previous editions. The month-long residential initiative is designed for girls aged 10–12 years and focuses on building self-confidence, leadership qualities, life skills and social responsibility. The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed by the NTPC theme song.

Senior officials, including L. N. Meitei, Commandant, CISF, Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, representatives of unions and associations, welfare organisations, teachers, parents and guardians attended the inaugural ceremony.

The event featured a short film tracing the journey of GEM 2026, vibrant cultural performances by girls from the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club and students of Notre Dame Academy, along with inspiring testimonials from alumni of the GEM 2023 batch. Students also presented a moving performance inspired by the life and ideals of Malala Yousafzai, highlighting the transformative power of education in empowering girls.

Addressing the gathering, Jaikumar Srinivasan emphasised that empowering girls is fundamental to building stronger families and communities. He praised NTPC Bongaigaon for creating a nurturing environment that encourages young girls to realise their full potential. Following the inaugural programme, he visited the residential facilities, interacted with the participants and distributed bicycles to all 50 girls as a gesture of encouragement for their educational journey.

In his address, Arnab Maitra reaffirmed NTPC’s commitment to education, empowerment and inclusive growth, describing the Girl Empowerment Mission as one of the organisation’s flagship community development initiatives that nurtures confident, capable and socially responsible future women leaders.

The four-week residential programme, running from 4 July to 31 July 2026, offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes academic learning, personality development, digital literacy, sports, creative arts, health and wellness sessions, exposure visits and activities aimed at enhancing the participants’ physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, expressed gratitude to parents, teachers, volunteers, welfare organisations and the organising committee for their collective support in making the initiative successful.

Since its launch in 2022, NTPC Bongaigaon has empowered 210 girls, including participants in the current edition. A distinctive feature of the programme is that 10 per cent of participants, selected through an independent evaluation conducted by an external agency, are provided free education at the NTPC township school, enabling deserving girls to continue their studies in a supportive learning environment.

Across the country, the Girl Empowerment Mission has benefited more than 13,000 girls at NTPC locations, reflecting the company’s sustained commitment to gender equality, social responsibility and sustainable community development.

The main programme was organized in the basement hall of Koyla Bhawan Headquarters, where Director (Technical/Operations), Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, and Director (Technical – Projects & Planning), Mr. Rajiv Kumar Sinha, administered the Swachhata Pledge to officers and employees present at the event.

Among those present were General Manager (Human Resources) Mr. Kumar Manoj, General Manager (Vigilance) Mr. N.K. Thakur, General Manager (Real Estate) Mr. Arvind Sinha, General Manager (PF & Pension) Mr. Vidyut Saha, Head of Department (Administration) Mr. Manish Mishra, Head of Department (CSR) Mr. Surendra Bhushan, along with other General Managers, Heads of Departments, officers, and employees.

To realize Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean and developed India, all participants took the Swachhata Pledge, committing themselves to maintaining cleanliness in their workplaces, residential premises, society, and surrounding environment, while also motivating others to do the same. They collectively resolved to treat cleanliness as a personal responsibility and pledged to contribute 100 hours of voluntary service annually, equivalent to two hours every week, towards cleanliness initiatives.

As part of the programme, officers and employees participated in a signature campaign carrying the message of a cleaner future and shared their thoughts on cleanliness. Participants also expressed their commitment by taking photographs at the specially created Swachhata Selfie Point.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Technical/Operations), emphasized that cleanliness is a noble human virtue that should be reflected in everyone’s conduct, enabling them to contribute to a cleaner environment and society. Mr. Rajiv Kumar Sinha, Director (Technical – Projects & Planning), stated that cleanliness is a moral responsibility and that every citizen should adopt clean habits as a contribution to nation-building.

In addition to the headquarters programme, Swachhata Pledge ceremonies were organized across all BCCL areas, including Barora, Block-II, CV Area, Sijua, East Jharia (EJ), West Jharia (WJ), Bastacolla, and Lodna. Officers and employees in these areas pledged to maintain cleanliness in their workplaces and surroundings. Selfie points were established at regional offices, while anti-littering posters were displayed at prominent locations, including the Block-II Area, to promote public awareness.

The forthcoming activities under the Swachhata Pakhwada campaign include cleanliness drives at Central and Regional Hospitals, cleaning of ponds, water tanks, and public places in BCCL colonies, inspection of rainwater harvesting systems, awareness workshops, signature campaigns, painting competitions in project schools, tree plantation drives, cyber cleanliness awareness sessions, cleanliness rallies, and special drives at religious and tourist locations. These initiatives are aimed at fostering widespread awareness regarding cleanliness and environmental conservation.

Alongside the Swachhata Pakhwada campaign, BCCL is also organizing a seven-day Yoga Camp from June 15 to June 21 to commemorate International Yoga Day. On the second day of the camp, officers and employees enthusiastically participated in yoga sessions under the guidance of yoga instructor Mr. D.N. Paswan. The camp will conclude on June 21, coinciding with the observance of International Yoga Day.

Their essays reflected deep concern for environmental protection and inspired others to contribute to positive social change.

Senior officials of CCL and members of the school administration graced the occasion and appreciated the students’ efforts. They emphasized that such competitions are powerful tools to promote positive thinking and social awareness among young minds. CCL’s mission, they noted, extends beyond industrial development to nurturing moral values and a sense of social responsibility in the younger generation.

The event also provided students with an opportunity to express their views and better understand the significance of environmental protection, cleanliness, and community service. Organizers stated that the competition helps in children’s personality development, leadership, and creativity while guiding them toward becoming sustainable and responsible citizens.

The CCL family described the initiative as an important step under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), reaffirming the organization’s commitment to bringing positive change to the community.

The programme concluded with the message that lasting societal change can only be achieved through education, awareness, and active youth participation—ensuring that future generations grow up to be clean, safe, and responsible citizens.
