In a major step towards bridging socio-economic divides, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched Project Aarohan, an initiative designed to nurture the educational aspirations of children of toll plaza employees across the country. The project was unveiled by NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav at the Authority’s headquarters in New Delhi, in the presence of Dr. Zafar Khan, Executive Director and Joint CEO of Vertis Infrastructure Trust, and senior NHAI officials.
Developed in collaboration with Vertis Infrastructure Trust and implemented by SMEC Trust’s Bharat Cares, Project Aarohan has been envisioned as more than a scholarship program. It seeks to remove financial barriers while also creating mentorship pathways, skill-building opportunities, and career guidance for students from marginalised backgrounds. The first phase, spanning from July 2025 to March 2026, carries a fund allocation of ₹1 crore.
Under this phase, 500 students studying from Class 11 up to graduation will receive annual scholarships of ₹12,000 each. Additionally, 50 bright students aspiring for postgraduate or higher studies will be awarded scholarships of ₹50,000 each. With structured workshops, mentorship support and career planning, the initiative aims to prepare students not only for higher education but also for employment and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the launch, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav emphasised the deeper vision behind the program. “Project Aarohan reflects NHAI’s commitment to the people who keep our highways running every day and to the aspirations of their families. By investing in the education and guidance of their children, we are nurturing talent that will power India’s next decade of growth,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Zafar Khan of Vertis Infrastructure Trust noted the alignment between infrastructure building and human development. “At Vertis, building infrastructure goes hand in hand with building human potential. Through Project Aarohan, we are pleased to partner with NHAI and Bharat Cares to help shape the future of the country. By helping create mentorship pathways for students that turn promise into performance, the benefits compound across families and local economies, creating a stronger Bharat,” he remarked.
The application process for the scholarships will be conducted online, ensuring transparency and inclusivity. Students will be required to submit academic records, income certificates, caste certificates, and identity proofs. A systematic selection process will ensure fair evaluation, while regular mentorship and performance tracking will support continuity of assistance for deserving candidates.
The nationwide project is expected to reach thousands of toll plaza families employed across NHAI’s vast highway network. By combining financial aid with sustained guidance, Project Aarohan promises to be a transformative step in uplifting first-generation learners, students from low-income households, and those belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and minority communities.
With its multi-pronged approach, the initiative is set to impact not only individual students but also their families and communities, creating a ripple effect of socio-economic empowerment.
