BCCL Signs Twin MoUs to Strengthen City Policing and Boost STEM Education

BCCL in collaboration with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad benefited nearly 2,500 underprivileged students from rural and mining-affected areas such as Jharia and Baghmara

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has taken two significant steps under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for FY 2025–26 by signing separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening education and public safety in Dhanbad district.

Promoting STEM Education in Government Schools

In a major initiative to enhance science-based learning among underprivileged students, BCCL signed an MoU with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for the project “Promoting STEM Education through IIT (ISM) in Government Schools of Dhanbad District.” The project will be implemented in six government schools with a total outlay of over ₹33 lakh, funded under the BCCL CSR Scheme 2025–26.

The initiative focuses on hands-on, activity-based and experiential learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It aims to nurture logical thinking, creativity, analytical ability and innovation among students, better preparing them for future technological and industrial challenges.

Notably, a similar project implemented last year by BCCL in collaboration with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad benefited nearly 2,500 underprivileged students from rural and mining-affected areas such as Jharia and Baghmara. The programme successfully sparked interest in science and technology and helped bridge the gap between rural students and modern educational opportunities.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Surendra Bhushan, Head of Department (CSR), along with members of the BCCL CSR team. Professor Dr. Niladri Das and Assistant Professor Dr. Rashmi Sinha represented IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.

MoU for Providing 600 Barricades to Strengthen City Policing

On the same day, BCCL also signed another MoU with the Dhanbad District Administration / Office of the Superintendent of Police for the project “Providing 600 Barricades for Better City Policing” under its CSR Programme (FY 2025–26).

Under this project, BCCL will provide financial assistance of ₹62 lakh to the district administration to strengthen crowd management, public safety and traffic regulation in the city.

Last year, BCCL had supplied 400 barricades under a similar initiative, which led to a marked improvement in traffic management and overall city security. Encouraged by the positive outcomes, the scope of the project has been expanded this year.

The signing ceremony was attended by Surendra Bhushan, Head of Department (CSR), and the BCCL CSR team. On behalf of Dhanbad Police, DSP (CCR) Sumit Kumar participated in the event.

Sustained Commitment to Regional Development

Through these twin initiatives, BCCL reaffirmed its commitment to education, safety, environment, health and infrastructure development in Dhanbad and surrounding areas. The projects reflect the company’s sustained efforts to deliver transformative social impact, contributing both to human capital development and improved civic infrastructure in the coal-bearing region.
