NTPC Bongaigaon has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam, for a ₹5 crore CSR project to develop Basantala Bisweswar Changakoti Memorial Shankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan, located in North Lakhimpur in Upper Assam, as a Model School.

The project aims to strengthen the institution’s educational infrastructure by providing classrooms, laboratories, a digital classroom, a library and other essential facilities.

Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, NTPC Bongaigaon, and Jagannath Rajbonshi, General Secretary, Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

The signing ceremony was attended by Arnab Maitra, Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, and Bhushan Goswami, CSR and Grant Coordinator, Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam. Other NTPC Bongaigaon representatives present included Sushil Kumar, AGM (Civil); Roshan Dungdung, AGM (HR); Debaleena Das, DGM (HR); Prashant Ch. Kumar, DGM (Civil Erection); Rounak Kundu, Engineer (CCD-Township); and Smriti Das, Executive (CSR).

Speaking on the occasion, Arnab Maitra said the Model School project is part of NTPC’s strategic CSR initiatives in Assam, aimed at strengthening educational infrastructure and expanding access to quality learning opportunities for children.

The proposed development will augment the school’s existing infrastructure through the construction of a ground floor and an Assam-type first floor, covering a combined area of approximately 1,926 square metres.

The facilities will include 13 classrooms, five laboratory rooms, a dedicated digital classroom and a library, along with a staff common room and administrative spaces. Separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls will also be provided.

The additional classrooms are expected to enhance the school’s capacity to accommodate students, while the laboratories will create greater opportunities for practical learning. The digital classroom and library will broaden access to educational resources and encourage students to explore subjects beyond their textbooks.

Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam, is a registered educational society affiliated with Vidya Bharati Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan. Headquartered in Guwahati, the organisation operates a network of Sankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan schools across Assam and brings decades of experience in school education to the initiative.

Planned for implementation over 36 months, the project will be undertaken by Shishu Shiksha Samiti, Assam. NTPC will monitor progress through periodic reports and site visits.

The initiative aims to create durable educational infrastructure, support academic, cultural and co-curricular activities, and improve access to quality learning facilities, particularly for children from economically weaker communities.
