Four girls from Project Affected Villages have secured admission to DAV NTPC Kanti in Class VI following their participation in NTPC Kanti’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026. NTPC Kanti will support their education up to Class XII/Intermediate, with an estimated expenditure of ₹10.50 lakh.

The four students — Varsha Kumari from Demha, Lakshmi Kumari from Rampur Lakshmi, Nishi Kumari from Bastpur Sherna and Anushka Kumari from Madhuban — were selected for admission on the basis of their performance during GEM-2026.

The month-long residential programme was organised by NTPC Kanti from May 25 to June 20, 2026, with 50 girls from Project Affected Villages participating in the initiative.

GEM-2026 combined academic learning with personality development and life-skills training. The participants received instruction in Mathematics, English, Hindi, Science and Computer Education, along with training and activities in yoga, dance, music, painting, karate, English speaking, public speaking and personality development.

The selection of four girls for admission to DAV NTPC Kanti is a significant outcome of the programme. NTPC Kanti has gone beyond the immediate intervention by committing to support their education through Class XII, providing continuity to the educational opportunity created through GEM.

Pankaj Kumar Gupta, Head of Project, NTPC Kanti, said, “GEM is not merely a programme for academic learning; it is an effort to build confidence, aspirations and opportunities for young girls from our neighbouring communities. The admission of these four girls to DAV NTPC Kanti is a matter of great pride. We endeavour to ensure that promising students receive continued support so that they can pursue their education with confidence and realise their potential.”

The initiative underscores NTPC Kanti’s focus on creating long-term social impact through education and women empowerment. By extending financial support beyond the duration of the GEM programme, NTPC is seeking to ensure that the selected students can continue their education without financial constraints.

GEM is a flagship initiative of NTPC focused on empowering young girls from communities located around its project areas. The programme combines academics with life skills, health and hygiene awareness, sports and personality development to create a supportive environment for girls to learn, grow and build confidence.

For the four students, admission to DAV NTPC Kanti marks the beginning of a new phase in their educational journey. For NTPC Kanti, the initiative represents an effort to convert a short-term empowerment programme into a long-term educational opportunity for girls from neighbouring communities.

The initiative is aligned with NTPC’s broader CSR priorities in education, women empowerment and community development, reinforcing its focus on supporting the socio-economic development of communities around its project areas.

NTPC Kanti has allocated ₹1 crore for the development of seven Chhath Ghats in and around the project area as part of its CSR initiative. The works will be executed through the concerned department of the Government of Bihar under the Deposit Work Scheme.

In this regard, Pankaj Kumar Gupta, Head of Project, NTPC Kanti, has written to the District Magistrate, Muzaffarpur, requesting execution of the proposed works through the concerned department of the Bihar Government. NTPC Kanti has earmarked a CSR budget of ₹1 crore for FY 2026-27 for the initiative.

The proposed Chhath Ghat development works will be undertaken at seven locations:

Birpur Pokhar

Sain Pokhar

Maisaha Pokhar

Panapur Kariyat Thana Pokhar

Sirsia Math Pokhar

Damodarpur Ganga Ram Pokhar

Rani Pokhar

The development of these Chhath Ghats will provide residents, particularly those from surrounding and Project Affected Villages (PAVs), with safer and more convenient facilities for observing Chhath Puja and other community activities.

The initiative assumes significance ahead of the upcoming Chhath festival, when these water bodies witness large gatherings of devotees. The proposed infrastructure is expected to facilitate safer and more organised celebrations for the local community.

NTPC Kanti has been undertaking various CSR and community development initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life and supporting the socio-economic development of communities around its project area. The development of Chhath Ghats is another step towards strengthening its commitment to community welfare and inclusive development.

NTPC Bongaigaon successfully concluded its four-week-long Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026, aligned with the Government of India’s flagship “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” initiative, with a vibrant cultural programme on 31 July 2026 followed by formal de-registration on 1 August 2026 at its Salakati Township. The programme marked the culmination of a month-long residential journey of learning, confidence-building and holistic development for 50 young girls from nearby communities.

The valedictory ceremony was graced by Arnab Maitra, Executive Director & Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon, as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, Maitra described GEM as a reflection of NTPC’s commitment to creating opportunities for young girls and enabling them to realise their potential. He appreciated the confidence and talent displayed by the participants through their cultural presentations and interactions.

Maitra highlighted how the four-week residential programme provided the girls with opportunities extending beyond classroom learning. Through educational exposure, creative activities, sports, interactions, workshops and experiential learning, the participants were encouraged to become more confident, expressive and independent. He also thanked the parents, teachers, district administration and all stakeholders whose support contributed to the successful conduct of GEM 2026.

Earlier, Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR, NTPC Bongaigaon, welcomed the gathering and spoke about the objectives of the Girl Empowerment Mission and the efforts made to provide the participants with a safe, engaging and nurturing environment. He acknowledged the active involvement of the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, GEM Committee members, faculty members, coordinators and various departments of NTPC Bongaigaon in making the programme successful. He also proposed the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to everyone associated with the month-long initiative.

The nearly two-hour cultural programme showcased the skills and confidence acquired by the girls during their stay. The performances included a skit based on noted athlete Hima Das, fusion dance, Assamese Bihu, Bodo folk dance, group songs, mime show, yoga presentations and a grand finale celebrating women’s empowerment. An exhibition featuring handmade art and craft items created by the participants during GEM was also organised alongside the programme.

The formal de-registration and handing-over of the participants to their parents/guardians was conducted on 1 August 2026. As part of the culmination of their GEM journey, certificates and framed photographs capturing memorable moments of the programme were presented to the participants. The concluding activities were held in the presence of Arnab Maitra; Anurag Gupta, General Manager (O&M); Amit Kumar Asthana, Head of HR; distinguished guests, representatives of unions and associations, faculty members, GEM Committee members and coordinators from Tanvi Consultancy Limited.

Conducted from 3 July to 31 July 2026, GEM offered a comprehensive mix of academics and co-curricular learning. Academic inputs included English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science and vernacular languages, complemented by sessions in computer literacy, life skills, yoga, dance, theatre, mime, sports, art and craft, clay and pottery painting, self-defence and other creative activities.

The girls also participated in a range of experiential and awareness-based programmes during the month. Sessions on fire and safety by CISF personnel, health and hygiene by medical professionals, environmental awareness, sports, plantation, public speaking and interactions with role models added to the residential learning experience. Educational and exposure visits further helped the participants explore areas beyond the conventional classroom environment.

GEM 2026 also marked an expansion of the programme at NTPC Bongaigaon, with the annual intake increasing from 40 to 50 girls. With the completion of this year’s edition, NTPC Bongaigaon has empowered 210 girls from communities in and around the station since commencing GEM in 2022.

Launched by NTPC in 2018, the Girl Empowerment Mission has grown into a major residential empowerment initiative for young girls, reaching more than 16,000 participants across the country. Through GEM, NTPC seeks to nurture confidence, creativity, knowledge, leadership and aspirations among young girls while providing them with opportunities to discover their abilities and dream of a wider world.

In a significant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to improve healthcare access in flood-prone and remote riverine regions, NTPC Bongaigaon has flagged off three boat ambulances to serve char and riverine villages in Kokrajhar district bordering Dhubri district.

The initiative is designed to address the longstanding healthcare challenges faced by communities that become isolated during annual floods and adverse weather conditions.

The boat ambulances were inaugurated and flagged off by Shri Derhasat Basumatary, Executive Member for Health & Family Welfare, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and MCLA of Salakati Constituency, in the presence of Smt. Moon Moon Brahma, Executive Member for Urban Development, BTC and MCLA of Parbatjhora Constituency, Shri Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services, BTC, senior officials of NTPC Bongaigaon, representatives of the District Health Department, healthcare personnel, and members of the local community.

Implemented under NTPC Bongaigaon’s CSR programme in collaboration with the BTC Government and the Directorate of Health Services, BTC, the project aims to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services for vulnerable populations residing in the riverine belts of Khutabagra and adjoining areas.

Supported through an investment of ₹20 lakh, the three boat ambulances are equipped with essential medicines and emergency medical facilities. Each vessel will be staffed by trained healthcare professionals, including medical personnel and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), enabling them to deliver primary healthcare services and emergency medical assistance directly to remote riverine communities.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Derhasat Basumatary appreciated NTPC Bongaigaon for introducing an innovative solution to one of the most pressing challenges faced by people living in flood-prone areas. He said the initiative would significantly improve access to healthcare, especially for pregnant women, children, senior citizens, and emergency patients when conventional transport becomes unavailable.

Smt. Moon Moon Brahma highlighted the importance of partnerships between public institutions and corporate organisations in enhancing the quality of life in rural and riverine communities. She commended NTPC Bongaigaon for its continued commitment to community welfare and social development across the Bodoland Territorial Region.

Shri Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services, BTC, said the boat ambulances would function as mobile healthcare units carrying medicines, medical equipment, and trained health workers to remote villages. He noted that the initiative would strengthen public healthcare delivery by supporting immunisation programmes, maternal healthcare, and treatment of common illnesses in difficult-to-reach locations.

NTPC Bongaigaon officials reiterated that healthcare remains one of the company’s key CSR priorities. They said the project reflects NTPC’s commitment to ensuring that geographical barriers do not prevent communities from accessing essential medical services. The boat ambulances are expected to serve as a vital lifeline during floods while providing year-round healthcare support to remote riverine populations.

Reinforcing its commitment to quality education and scientific learning, NTPC Limited Bongaigaon has inaugurated a Mobile Science Lab at Salakati M.E. School in Kokrajhar district under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

The initiative was inaugurated by Suprava Roy in the presence of officials from the Education Department, representatives of Seva Bharati Purvanchal, school authorities, teachers, students and NTPC Bongaigaon officials.

Implemented at an estimated cost of ₹58 lakh, the Mobile Science Lab aims to enhance science education through practical, activity-based learning and hands-on experimentation. The project is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world scientific application, especially in schools with limited laboratory facilities.

Starting from Kokrajhar district, the Mobile Science Lab will reach 60 schools across Kokrajhar, Chirang and Bongaigaon districts, enabling students to participate in scientific experiments, interactive demonstrations and curriculum-based learning activities. The mobile facility is equipped with scientific models, experiment kits and educational tools that make science more engaging and accessible for young learners.

Speaking on the occasion, Suprava Roy appreciated NTPC Bongaigaon’s efforts and underscored the importance of experiential learning in nurturing scientific temper among students. She noted that practical exposure to science at an early stage can spark curiosity, creativity and innovation while encouraging students to explore careers in science and technology.

Representatives of Seva Bharati Purvanchal highlighted that the Mobile Science Lab would travel from school to school, allowing students to conduct experiments and observe scientific concepts in action. The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen science education in rural and semi-urban areas by supplementing conventional classroom teaching.

NTPC Bongaigaon officials stated that education remains a key focus area of the station’s CSR activities. Through initiatives such as the Mobile Science Lab, the company aims to create meaningful learning opportunities, promote innovation and contribute to the holistic development of students across the region.

The project reflects NTPC’s broader commitment to empowering future generations through education, knowledge-sharing and skill development.
