Nestled in the heart of Jharkhand, CCL — a subsidiary of Coal India Limited — has been the state’s largest coal producer, playing a vital role in energizing the nation. Beyond energy production, CCL has made a deep and lasting contribution to the social, economic, and human development of Jharkhand.
The company’s operations contribute significantly to the state’s revenue each year. Yet, CCL’s role goes far beyond economics — it is a sensitive and socially responsible organization that has consistently worked to strengthen the social fabric of Jharkhand.
Driving Social Development through CSR
Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, CCL has made commendable progress in education, healthcare, nutrition, sports, environmental protection, and sustainable livelihoods across rural Jharkhand.
In the financial year 2024–25, CCL’s total CSR expenditure stood at approximately ₹80 crore, with around 80% of this amount being spent within a 25-km radius of its operational areas. The remaining funds supported projects in other parts of the state, showcasing the company’s commitment to “People Within the State.”
Empowering the Youth through Education
CCL firmly believes that the strength of a state lies in its youth. With this vision, it has launched several educational initiatives to nurture Jharkhand’s young talent.
A landmark project is the state-level library being constructed at Ranchi University with an investment of around ₹65 crore. This 5,000-seat modern facility will provide students with advanced learning, research, and competitive exam preparation resources.
Through “Project Digital Vidya,” CCL has established smart classrooms and computer labs in 193 government schools across eight districts, bridging the digital divide and promoting technology-enabled learning.
Among its flagship initiatives, “CCL Ke Lal” and “CCL Ki Ladli” stand out for offering free residential coaching and education to economically disadvantaged but meritorious students from Jharkhand. Hundreds of these students have secured admissions to IITs, NITs, and other prestigious institutions, turning their dreams into reality.
Promoting Health and Nutrition
In the field of healthcare, CCL has taken several innovative steps to make medical services accessible across Jharkhand.
A centralized kitchen is being set up in Ramgarh, in collaboration with the Akshaya Patra Foundation, to provide mid-day meals to 50,000 children daily.
In Hazaribagh Medical College, the establishment of a modular operation theatre has enabled thousands of patients to access free surgical facilities.
Under the ‘Nikshay Mitra’ initiative, CCL supports tuberculosis patients in Latehar and Chatra districts with nutritional food and counseling, aligning with the ‘TB Mukt Bharat’ mission.
Health camps, distribution of nutrition kits, and special programs for women and the elderly — such as Multi Activity Centres (MACE) — have further enhanced community well-being.
Nurturing Sports and Skill Development
Recognizing Jharkhand’s rich sporting talent, CCL — through the Jharkhand State Sports Promotion Society (JSSPS) — runs a sports academy at Khelgaon, Ranchi, providing free training, education, accommodation, and nutrition to hundreds of cadets, most of whom come from SC/ST and backward communities. These cadets have proudly represented the state and nation, winning numerous national and international medals.
To promote skill development and self-reliance, CCL has initiated programs such as Plastic Engineering Training, Loader Operator Training, Natural Dyeing and Handloom Weaving Project, and E-Rickshaw Distribution, in collaboration with CIPET. These efforts have empowered thousands of rural youth and women, creating pathways to sustainable livelihoods.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
Environmental protection is an integral part of CCL’s operational philosophy. The company actively undertakes dust control, water conservation, mine aquaculture, tree plantation, and solid waste management activities in its mining areas.
Under its ongoing green campaign, about 1 crore saplings have been planted, rejuvenating Jharkhand’s greenery and restoring ecological balance.
